First Chief Minister of Assam – Gopinath Bordoloi (26 January 1950 to 6 Aug 1950)

The First Chief Minister of Assam was Gopinath Bordoloi, who held his office from 26 January 1950 to 6 Aug 1950. He was a follower of the Gandhian principle of non-violence as a political tool.He was arrested in 1922 due to active participation in the Non-co-operation movement and was put in jail for a year.Gopinath Bordoloi’s Cabinet resigned in 1940 following an appeal by Mohandas K. Gandhi. He wrote several books like Annasaktiyog, Shreeramachandra, Hajrat Mohammad, and Budhhadeb while in jail. Throughout his life, he was a stern believer in Gandhian principles. He led a simple life in spite of being a Chief Minister.He died on 5 August 1950.

Second Chief Minister of Assam – Bishnuram Medhi (9 Aug 1950 to 27 Dec 1957)

Bishnuram Medhi was Second Chief Minister of Assam from 9 Aug 1950 to 27 Dec 1957 and Governor of Madras State from January 1958 till May 1964.Bishnuram joined the Indian National Congress in the 1920s and participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement.In 1926, he was appointed Joint-Secretary of the Reception Committee of the Pandu session of the Indian National Congress.In 1930, he was elected President of the Assam Provincial Congress.He had a long eventful life which came to an end on 21 January 1981 at the age of 92.

Chief Minister of Assam – Bimala Prasad Chaliha (28 Dec 1957 to 6 November 1970)

Bimala Prasad Chaliha was the Third Chief Minister of Assam from 28 Dec 1957 to 6 November 1970.He was a Leader of Indian National Congress and a freedom fighter who was put behind bar in the Jorhat Jail in 1942 for active participation in Mahatma Gandhi’s call of Quit India to the British Govt. He was elected to the post of Chief Minister for three five years terms of Assam State, once from Badarpur Constituency and twice from Sonari Constituency.He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1971.He died on 25 February 1971.

Chief Minister of Assam – Mahendra Mohan Choudhry (11 November 1970 to 30 Jan 1972)

Mahendra Mohan Choudhry was the Fourth Chief Minister of Assam from 11 November 1970 to 30 Jan 1972.He also served as governor of Punjab.A great persona and a true Gandhian, he fought for the independence of India during freedom movement and went to jail thrice in 1932, 1941 and in 1945 respectively. He was a member of Assam Vidhan Sabha (1946–1952), Parliamentary Secretary(1947), State Minister (1951, 1955), President of Assam Congress Committee, President of Assam Vidhan Sabha (1967), Cabinet Minister (1967–1970).He died in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital following a heart attack on 27 December 1982.

Chief Minister of Assam – Sarat Chandra Singha (31 Jan 1972 to 12 March 1978)

Sarat Chandra Singha was the Fifth Chief Minister of Assam from 31 Jan 1972 to 12 March 1978.He was a leader of Indian National Congress, Indian National Congress (Socialist) and Nationalist Congress Party.He entered politics in 1946 through Indian National Congress and elected to Assam state assembly four times from Bilasipara east constituency in 1946-52, 1962–67, 1972–78 and 1985-90.He died on 25 December 2005 at his Guwahati residence due to old age ailments.

Chief Minister of Assam – Golap Borbora (12 March 1978 to 4 September 1979)

Golap Borbora was the Sixth Chief Minister of Assam from 12 March 1978 to 4 September 1979.He was the first non congress chief minister of Assam. Borbora was a member of Rajya Sabha between 1968 and 1974. Borbora was a follower of Ram Manohar Lohia and Jai Prakash Narayan and was imprisoned several times during the freedom movement.He died in 2006.He was 83 and was suffering with old age ailments.

Jogendra Nath Hazarika was the Seventh Chief Minister of Assam from 9 September 1979 to 11 Dec 1979.He was elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from the Dibrugarh constituency, Assam in 1951, 1957, 1962 and 1967.

Chief Minister of Assam – Syeda Anwara Taimur (6 Dec 1980 to 30 June 1981)

Syeda Anwara Taimur was the Eighth Chief Minister of Assam from 6 Dec 1980 to 30 June 1981.In the history of Assam, she was the only female and Muslim Chief Minister of the state.She was the first Muslim woman Chief Minister of any state. From 1983 to 1985 she was the PWD minister of the same state.She was an elected member of the Assam Assembly (MLA) in 1972, 1978, 1983, and 1991.Taimur died on 28 September 2020 in Australia due to cardiac arrest.

Chief Minister of Assam – Kesab Chandra Gogoi (13 Jan 1982 to 19 March 1982)

Kesab Chandra Gogoi was the Ninth Chief Minister of Assam from 13 Jan 1982 to 19 March 1982.He was member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Dibrugarh constituency. Gogoi was elected to Assam Legislative Assembly in 1978 as a Janata Party candidate. He joined the Indian National Congress and became Minister of Finance Anwara Taimur cabinet.He was also a minister in the Hiteswar Saikia cabinet from 1983 to 1985.He died on 5 August 1998

Chief Minister of Assam – Hiteswar Saikia (27 Feb 1983 to 23 Dec 1985, 30 June 1991 to 22 April 1996)

Hiteswar Saikia was the tenth Chief Minister of Assam from 27 Feb 1983 to 23 Dec 1985 and 30 June 1991 to 22 April 1996.He was included in the newly formed Sarat Chandra Sinha Ministry.He was given a junior rank as a minister of state and was given the three portfolios of Home, Education and Public relations in 1972.In 1983 Saikia became Chief Minister for the first time as opposition boycotted the polls.He was appointed the Lt. Governor of Mizoram.He died on 22 April 1996.

Chief Minister of Assam – Prafulla Kumar Mahanta (24 Dec 1985 to 28 November 1990, 15 May 1996 to 17 May 2001)

Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was the eleventh Chief Minister of Assam from 724 Dec 1985 to 28 November 1990 and 15 May 1996 to 17 May 2001.He was a former President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a major political party in the Indian state of Assam.He was the youngest Chief Minister of Assam.On 4 September 2010 he was unanimously elected as the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly.On 14 July 2014 he resigned as president of Asom Gana Parishad after its debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.He was admitted to Guwahati hospital on 16 th January 2021 for age related diseases.

Chief Minister of Assam – Bhumidhar Barman (22 April 1996 to 14 May 1996)

Bhumidhar Barman was the Twelveth Chief Minister of Assam from 22 April 1996 to 14 May 1996.He was a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly being elected 7 times.He was first elected in 1967.In 2015, he was made a Cabinet Minister of Assam.He died on 18 April 2021.

Chief Minister of Assam – Tarun Gogoi (18 May 2001 to 24 May 2016)

Tarun Gogoi was the Thirteen Chief Minister of Assam from 18 May 2001 to 24 May 2016. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and led the party to a record three consecutive electoral victories and was the longest serving Chief Minister of the state.He had also served six terms as a Member of parliament, Lok Sabha and had also served as an Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Food and Ministry of Food Processing Industries. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honor in 2021.He died on 23 November 2020 at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital due to COVID-19 induced complications.

Chief Minister of Assam – Sarbananda Sonowal (24 May 2016 to 10 May 2021)

Sarbananda Sonowal was the Fourteen Chief Minister of Assam from 24 May 2016 to 10 May 2021.He is an Indian politician from Assam, belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. Currently he is an MLA in Assam Legislative Assembly.He has also served as the Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India, from 2014 to 2016.In 2001, he was elected as the MLA from Moran constituency of Assam.In 2004, he became a Lok Sabha member representing Dibrugarh constituency.He lost Lok Sabha election from Dibrugarh in 2009.He joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2011.In 2021 he was re-elected to Assam Vidhan Sabha from Majuli. He resigned as Chief Minister and proposed Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name as his successor.

Chief Minister of Assam – Himanta Biswa Sarma (10 May 2021 to Incumbent)

Himanta Biswa Sarma was the fifteen and Current Chief Minister of Assam.A former member of the INC, Sarma joined BJP on 23 August 2015.He is an MLA from Jalukbari constituency in Assam.He was elected as MLA from 2001 till 2015 as a member of INC and from May 2016 as a member of BJP.Sarma won the 2016 Assembly elections and was sworn in as Cabinet Minister on 24 May 2016.He is often lovingly called ‘Mama’ (meaning maternal uncle) by Assamese youth.
