Centre Sanctioned Funds For Jal Jeevan Mission In Odisha, Meghalaya, Assam & Bihar
- The Centre has approved Rs 812 crores for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal) in Odisha for the financial year.
- Jal Shakti Ministry said, this allocation is a significant jump from last year’s allocation of 297 crore rupees. Out of 81 lakh rural households in Odisha, State Government has planned to provide over 16 lakh household connections in 2020-21.
- The state is planning 100 per cent household tap connections by the year 2024. Priority is being given for 100 per cent coverage of villages under water-scarce areas, quality-affected areas, Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna villages, villages in Aspirational Districts and SC/ST dominated habitations. Jal Jeevan Mission encourages participation of local community in surveillance of water quality.
- Jal Jeevan Mission was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year aims to provide tap water connections to 18 Crore rural households of the country by the year 2024.
Meghalaya-
- Centre has approved 175 crore rupees for implementation of Jal jeevan mission in Meghalaya during 2020-21. Jal Jeevan Mission was launched by Union Government last year aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connection to every rural household by 2024. Jal Shakti Ministry said.
- The state is planning to cover 1,096 villages with 100 percent tap connection in 2020-21.
- A proposed 100 per cent tap connections to all the households by December, 2022. Out of five lakh 89 thousand total rural households, the State is planning to provide one lakh 80 thousand tap connections in 2020-21.
- The state has been allocated an amount of Rs 182 crore under 15th Finance Commission Grants to PRIs during 2020-21; 50 percent of this amount has to be mandatorily spent on water and sanitation.
Assam-
- Centre has approved Rs 1,407 crore for implementation of Jal jeevan mission in Assam during the year 2020-21.
- Jal Shakti Ministry said, Assam has planned to provide functional tap connections to 13 lakh rural households in 2020-21, out of total 63 lakh households.
- The state has planned to immediately provide household tap connections to all remaining households belonging to weaker and marginalised sections on a priority basis. A defined roadmap has also been charted for the effective implementation of Village Action Plan with the active participation of the rural community.
Bihar-
- The Centre has allocated over Rs 1832 crore for the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission during 2020-21 according to the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- Ministry of Jal Shakti on Saturday informed that the Bihar government presented their Jal Jeevan Mission Annual Action Plan before them for consideration and approval, wherein in it is planned to have 100 per cent coverage of all households with functional tap water connections by 2020-21.
- “Bihar state government has set an ambitious goal of providing all the remaining households with tap connection,” the Ministry said in a statement.
- A proper plan is in place for 100 per cent coverage of all 38 districts during 2020-21. Bihar Government is also giving special attention to providing 100 per cent of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) in Aspirational districts, quality-affected habitations and SC/ST villages.
- Government of India has allocated Rs 1832.66 Crore for this during 2020-21. The State plans to provide tap connections to remaining 1.50 Crore households in 2020-21.
About Jal Jeevan Mission–
The Central Government assistance to States for rural water supply began in 1972 with the launch of Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme. It was renamed as National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) in 2009, which is a centrally sponsored scheme with fund sharing between the Centre and the States. Under NRDWP, one of the objectives was to “enable all households to have access to and use safe & adequate drinking water within premises to the extent possible”. It was proposed to achieve the goal by 2030, coinciding with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. But now, it is has been planned to achieve the goal by 2024 through Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). As per the information available with DDWS, as on 31.3.2019, only 18.33% of rural households i.e.,3.27 Crore out of the total 17.87 Crore rural households in the country, have piped water connection.
Government of India has restructured and subsumed the ongoing National Rural Drinking Water Programme(NRDWP) into Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household i.e., Har Ghar Nal Se Jal (HGNSJ) by 2024.
The goal of JJM is to provide functional household tap connection to every household with service level at the rate of 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd).
