Explanation: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has instructed financial institutions and banks to adopt an Alternative Reference Rate, primarily the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR), and end their reliance on the scandal-shrouded London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) and Mumbai Interbank Forward Outright Rate (MIFOR) by July 1. The central bank has said that most new transactions now use SOFR and the Modified Mumbai Interbank Forward Outright Rate (MMIFOR) as benchmarks.
The RBI expects banks and financial institutions to have in place the necessary systems and processes to enable a complete transition away from LIBOR by July 1.
LIBOR is being phased out because of its role in exacerbating the 2008 Financial Crisis and for LIBOR manipulation scandals among rate-setting banks.
However, there have been a few instances of Dollar LIBOR-linked financial contracts undertaken or facilitated by banks and FIs after January 1, and the RBI has emphasized the need for fallback clauses in all required contracts.
As of June 30, the publication of the remaining five Dollar LIBOR settings will permanently come to a halt.
Even though a few synthetic settings will still continue to be published after June 30, 2023, it’s been made clear by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority, which oversees LIBOR, that these settings are not intended for use in any new financial contracts. Furthermore, Financial Benchmarks India Pvt Ltd will cease to publish the MIFOR, an interest rate benchmark for domestic purposes that relies on Dollar LIBOR, after the aforementioned June 30 deadline.

The loan has a maturity of 11.5 years with a grace period of 4.5 years.

4. The WHO has declared the end of the public health emergency of international concern of which disease?
Explanation: The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the global health emergency for mpox, a viral disease formerly known as monkeypox, has ended after 10 months. This came after confirmed cases in over 100 countries since the disease started spreading globally in May 2022. The emergency committee of the WHO made the recommendation to end the health emergency, and WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the decision during a press conference.
Mpox is a viral disease that spreads through direct contact with body fluids and was first observed in humans in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970. Since then, the disease has mainly been limited to West and Central African countries. However, last May, the disease started to spread globally, prompting the WHO to declare it a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). According to the WHO, over 87,000 cases and 140 deaths have been reported from 111 countries during the outbreak. Symptoms of mpox include fever, muscular aches, and large boil-like skin lesions.
5. The Ministry of Finance lowered the threshold limit of e-invoicing from Rs 10 crore to _____________.
Explanation: Businesses with a turnover of Rs 5 crore or more will be obligated to generate e-invoicing for all business-to-business (B2B) transactions starting from August 1, according to a new mandate notified by the Ministry of Finance. The previous requirement for e-invoicing was for companies with a turnover of Rs 10 crore or more.
The goal of this new mandate is to increase digitalisation of transactions, provide greater transparency in sales reporting, reduce errors and mismatches, automate data entry work and improve compliance.
The implementation of e-invoicing became mandatory for companies with a turnover of over Rs 500 crore from October 1, 2020, which then extended to those with a turnover of over Rs 100 crore beginning January 1, 2021.
From April 1, 2021, companies with a turnover of over Rs 50 crore had to generate B2B e-invoices, while the threshold was lowered to Rs 20 crore on April 1, 2022, and then further lowered to Rs 10 crore as of October 1, 2022.
To avail input tax credit, taxpayers must generate invoices on their internal systems or billing software and then report them to the invoice registration portal (IRP).
6. India’s retail inflation declined to _________ in April 2023 as per data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
Explanation: The annual retail inflation eased to 4.7% in April from 5.66% the previous month, government data showed. It is for the second month in a row that Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation remained within the RBI’s comfort zone of below 6%. India’s industrial production rose 1.1% in March, according to official data released on Friday.
Factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew 2.2% in March 2022.
