Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2018
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2018. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated every year to mark the contribution of overseas Indian community in the development of India. These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and Indian communities in India for mutually beneficial activities. These conventions are also very useful in networking among the overseas Indian community residing in various parts of the world and enable them to share their experiences in various fields.
This year marks the 25 years of ASEAN-Indian Partnership which is based on centuries-old cultural, religious and human links, forged on an ancient route of commerce.
The Indian Diaspora is an important part of Southeast Asia’s diversity and a strong bridge between India and ASEAN.
This year’s PBD will celebrate the ASEAN-Indian partnership and will be themed Ancient Route, New Journey: Diaspora in the Dynamic ASEAN INDIA Partnership. It will be held in Singapore – which is considered as not only India’s gateway to the East but also is the heart of ASEAN. The event will be held at Marina Bay Sands, on 6th & 7th January 2018. The event hopes to generate outcomes that deepen the diaspora’s relations with India and play a key role in promoting closer ties between India and ASEAN.
Introduction – Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a celebratory day observed annually on 9 January by the Republic of India to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.
Established in 2003, it is sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Confederation of Indian Industries and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. A celebratory event is held on 7–9 January every other year in an Indian city: a forum for issues concerning the Indian Diaspora is organised and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards are given.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated every year to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the Government, reconnect them with their roots and celebrate their achievements and contributions. 13 PBD Conventions have been held in India so far.
The PBD conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the Government on issues of concern to our Diaspora and to explore opportunities for investment in India and contribution to the country of their origin. These conventions also provide an opportunity to the overseas Indians to network with other overseas Indians residing in various parts of the world.
During the PBD Convention, overseas Indians are honoured with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to recognize their contributions in various fields both in India and abroad.
In 2015 the Government of India revised the format of PBD and re-energized its engagement with the Indian Diaspora to enable sustained and more substantive engagement. Following the review, the PBD Convention will be held once in two years in a city outside Delhi. In the intervening year, smaller, outcome-based PBD Conferences will be organized in New Delhi on issues of concern to the Indian Diaspora. It was decided that Indian Missions and Consulates will also celebrate PBD every year.
Through the first series of PBD Conferences which commenced in February 2016 the Government is proactively engaging with the Overseas Indians in an issue-based dialogue.
