- International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is observed on June 4. The main aim behind observing this day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children across the world, which is caused due to any kind of abuse including physical, mental and emotional.
- The day came into being in a special United Nations General Assembly session, which was held to discuss the condition of Palestine. It is during this session that took place on August 19, 1982 that the organisation asserted that it is “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victims of Israel’s acts of aggression”. This came after the Lebanon War which took place in 1982 and had a huge number of child victims.
- The United Nations also mentions how in a situation of armed conflict it is the children who are most affected by the consequences.
- As mentioned by the UN, the six most common violations include recruitment and use of children in war, killing, sexual violence, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access.
- The celebration of International Day of Innocent Children’s Victims of Aggression is of enormous significance, as it acknowledges an issue as horrific as violence that is too committed against children.
- As a result of international conflicts, countless children have been killed or mutilated. Many of those who have survived have lost their parents and their means of sustenance. Human Aggression has stolen childhoods of an approx. Two hundred fifty million kids, With their dreams, destroyed.
- In today’s, a minor’s death caused by violence is every 5 minutes. 1 in 10 children faces sexual abuse before they turn an adult. 9 in 10 children do not have corporal punishment entirely prohibited in their home countries. Seven hundred thirty-two million children don’t even have the option of getting legal protection in their respective countries.
- Children often are subjugated to online violence too. Two hundred forty-six million children are enslaved to school-related violence like bullying, every single year. Hence, awareness needs to be created, and strict measures must be ensured to annihilate violence against children.
