Dr Harsh Vardhan participates in NAM Health Ministers’ meeting through Video Conferencing
- Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare participated in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Health Ministers’ meeting through video conference, here today.
- The meeting was chaired by Mr. Ogtay Shiraliyev, Minister of Health, Republic of Azerbaijan.
- The NAM Summit is being organized at a time when the international community has been faced with a pandemic which has disrupted lives and livelihood of millions of people around the world.
- NAM expressed its concern at the global threat posed by COVID-19 and resolved to fight it with proper preparedness, prevention, resilience-building, and greater national, regional and international collaboration.
- Dr. Harsh Vardhan while addressing the meeting asserted that the COVID-19 pandemic has displayed the interconnectivity and interdependency of countries like never before.He added that it has made the world realize that the man-made challenges can only be faced together with collaboration.
- Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that India has been fighting the COVID battle with a firm political will under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.He said that the country has taken every possible step to ensure that the spread of the virus is significantly contained.
- Health Minister added that, the support rendered by 135 crore citizens to honor the decisions on nationwide lockdowns ensured that the mortality rate remained consistently much below than most of the other affected countries.
- He also made a mention about the added capacity in terms of Health infrastructure which helped assist in achieving a much contained spread of the virus.
- The Minister said that India not only successfully contained the spread of COVID-19 in the country but also shared it’s medical expertise with neighbouring countries to aid them in their fight against the pandemic.
- He also highlighted country’s significant contribution in ensuring medical supplies to over 123 countries , including 59 NAM countries.

- The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a forum of 120 developing world states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. After the United Nations, it is the largest grouping of states worldwide.
- Drawing on the principles agreed at the Bandung Conference in 1955, the NAM was established in 1961 in Belgrade, SR Serbia, Yugoslavia through an initiative of the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito.
