Mukesh Ambani Becomes Asia’s Second-Richest Person with $34.8 bn

  • After storming the country with his ‘Rs 0 JioPhone’, Mukesh Ambani is making headlines once again as he climbed past Hong Kong’s business tycoon Li Ka-shing to become Asia’s second richest man.
  • The business tycoon, who is the owner of the Rs 1,800 billion Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), added USD 12.1 billion (around Rs. 77,000 crore) to his wealth this year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Ambani’s net worth stood at USD 34.8 billion (around Rs. 2.2 lakh crore), pushing him to number 19 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index from 29 at the end of 2016. .
  • This development comes amid RIL shares soaring post the company’s Q1 net profits recorded a 28 per cent rise in 2017.

India’s GDP growth in June quarter to be around 6.6%: Nomura

  • India’s GDP growth is likely to be higher at 6.6% in the June quarter from the previous three months this year even as the pick-up in growth numbers in India has lost some momentum on account of GST, says a report.
  • According to Japanese financial services major Nomura, the pick-up in growth which was visible toward end-of March quarter had lost some momentum towards end of the June quarter due to destocking and uncertainty ahead of the Goods and Services tax (GST).

Swachh Survekshan-2018 launched to assess sanitation in all 4,041 cities and towns of the country.

  • Central Government today launched ‘Swachh Survekshan-2018’ to rank all the 4,041 cities and towns of the country based on infrastructure development for improved sanitation services and their sustainability, outcomes, citizen connect and visible impact on ground.
  • Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Narendra Singh Tomar launched the survey, the third in the series and released a comprehensive Survey Tool Kit, explaining the methodology, weightages and new features and thrust areas  that helps cities and towns prepare for the field survey over the next six months.

India-Bhutan trade & transit pact come into force.

  • The bilateral trade relations between India and Bhutan are governed by the Agreement on Trade, Commerce and Transit between the Government of India and Bhutan.
  • The Agreement provides for a free trade regime between the territories of India and Bhutan. The Agreement also provides for duty free transit of Bhutanese merchandise for trade with third countries.
  • The new Agreement will further strengthen the bilateral trade relations between India and Bhutan.

Arvind Panagariya resigns as NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman.

  • Noted economist Arvind Panagariya has resigned as vice-chairman of the Niti Ayog to return to academics, triggering a search for a new second-in-command at the federal policy think-tank.
  • He will remain in office till 31 August when he will end his two-an-a-half-year stint at the body that replaced the Planning Commission.

Under Namami Gange New Projects Worth Rs. 425 Crore Approve.

  • The Executive Committee of National Mission for Clean Ganga in its 4th meeting approved seven projects worth Rs 425 crore in the sector of sewage infrastructure, Ghat development and research.
  • In sewage sector, three projects each in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been approved.
  • For Uttar Pradesh, interception, diversion and STP projects for Unnao, Shuklaganj and Ramnagar have been approved at a total cost of Rs 238.64 crore.
  • While in Bihar, three projects at Sultanganj, Naugachia and Mokama with total estimated cost of Rs 175 crore have been approved.

SC bans use of five metals in firecrackers.

  • Supreme Court today imposed a ban on the use of five harmful metals including lead and mercury in firecrackers as they cause enormous air pollution.
  • A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur prohibited use of lithium, mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead metals which are used in the manufacturing of firecrackers.

Deadline to apply for crop insurance scheme extended to August 5.

  • Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Pandurang Fundkar said,The deadline for subscribing to the Union government’s crop insurance scheme has been extended to August 5 2017.
  • “The last day to apply for the scheme was July 31. But a large number of farmers have not been able to apply. Now their applications will be accepted till August 5 at bank branches,”.
  • The applications will not be accepted at Common Service Centres (CSCs) but only at the banks.

PM Modi to inaugurate ‘Rajaswa Gyansangam’ on September,1, 2017.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the two-day ‘Rajaswa Gyansangam’ on September 1, during which the central and state tax officers will brainstorm on major issues.
  • The two day conclave will be held on September 1-2 in the national capital New Delhi and the focus of the discussion will be on GST as well as on unearthing black money.
  • This will be for the first time that the tax officers of the state governments will also be invited for discussion on the GST related issues.

  • Tech giant Cisco has named former Philips Healthcare executive, Sameer Garde as president for its India and SAARC operations.
  • He succeeds Dinesh Malkani, who is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.

  • An Army medic from Michigan who risked his life multiple times to rescue Vietnam War comrades is becoming the first person to receive the Medal of Honor from President Donald Trump.

Los Angeles to Host 2028 Olympic Summer Games, Paris Gets 2024.

  • Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics after reaching a deal with Olympic organizers
  • The agreement also paves the way for the 2024 Summer Games to be awarded to Paris
  • Paris endured the disappointment of failed bids in 1992, 2008 and 2012.

Abhijeet Gupta finishes second in Czech Open chess tournament.

  • Commonwealth Champion Abhijeet Gupta came up with a spirited effort to beat Florian Kaczur of Hungary and finish second in the Czech International Open chess tournament at Pardubidze in Czech Republic.

Isner downs Harrison for fourth ATP Atlanta title.

  • John Isner claimed his fourth ATP Atlanta title on Sunday, saving a set-point in both sets en route to a 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (9/7) win over Ryan Harrison.
  • John Isner, who has reached the final in seven of eight editions of the tournament, added a fourth title to those he won in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Dhrupad maestro Ustad Sayeeduddin Dagar dies aged 78.

  • Ustad Hussain Sayeeduddin Dagar, maestro and custodian of the venerable Dhrupad tradition of Hindustani classical music and a member of the eminent Dagar family, passed away aged 78 in Pune after a brief illness.
