World Hepatitis Day 2017 observed globally
The World Hepatitis Day was observed globally on 28 July 2017 with the theme “Eliminate Hepatitis” to mobilize intensified action towards the health targets in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.This year’s theme is aimed at achieving elimination of hepatitis, greater awareness, increased diagnosis including universal vaccination, blood and injection safety, harm reduction and treatment.The Day aims to bring the world together under a single theme to raise awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to influence real change.
India’s first mobile ticketing system to be launched by Mumbai Metro
Mumbai Metro One on Wednesday announced the launch of India’s first Mobile Ticketing System ‘OnGo’ which will help commuters pass the AFC gates using their mobile phones. Through the Mumbai Metro App, commuters will be able to buy their token or pass and generate a QR Code which will be used to gain access through the automated fare collection (AFC) gates.
PV Sindhu appointed Group-I officer in Andhra Pradesh
Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu has been appointed a Group-I officer in Andhra Pradesh. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu handed over the government order to the Rio Olympics silver winning shuttler on Thursday. Presenting the offer letter, Naidu said he was hopeful that Sindhu would bring more medals to the country in future.
The state government has issued orders in this regard, mentioning that PV Sindhu is appointed the deputy collector, asking her to report to the concerned commissioner within 30 days.
The government had amended Andhra Pradesh (Regulation of Appointments to Public Services and Rationalisation of Staff Pattern and Pay Structure) Act, 1994, as recruitment in public service has to be made only through the APPSC, selection committee or employment exchange.
Bolivian President declares ‘Total Independence’ from World Bank and IMF
Bolivia’s President Eva Morales in July 2017 declared that his nation has achieved “total independence” from the IMF and the World Bank. President Morales declared the news on his official twitter account.The socialist leader published his comments following a meeting with his peers at a gathering in Argentina of the Mercosur, a sub-regional economic bloc.
Shikha Sharma reappointed Axis Bank CEO for three years
Axis Bank Ltd has re-appointed Shikha Sharma as managing director and chief executive officer for three years from June 2018, putting to rest speculation that she was leaving the bank. Sharma’s term was due to end in June 2018. Reserve Bank of India rules allow banks to choose a CEO only for three years, although they are eligible for re-appointment.
National Centre for Seismology launches an App ‘India Quake’
Union Minister of Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Dr. Harshvardhan launched an app “India Quake” on the occasion of Foundation Day of Ministry of Earth Sciences in New Delhi.
The “India Quake” Developed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the ‘India Quake’ will automatically disseminate relevant parameter (location, time and magnitude) after the occurrence of earthquakes.
“The app will make information dissemination faster with no restrictions on the number of recipients. Any citizen can download this App and get the real time earthquake location information on his/her mobile”, said the ministry of earth sciences (MoES) in a statement.
AFC appoints Indonesia as host of AFC U-19 championship
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Competition Committee officially awarded Indonesia the hosting of the AFC Under-19 championship next year. The AFC U-19 championship is scheduled to be held from October 18 to November 4 of next year.
PNB ties up with Bajaj Allianz General for distribution
State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance have signed an agreement for the distribution of insurance products through the branches. Under this agreement, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance will offer personal lines of insurance products such as health, personal accident, home, motor and travel along with commercial line of insurance products such as property, marine and engineering insurance, etc to the bank’s customers, a joint statement said. The bank has widespread network of around 7,000 branches.
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos briefly overtakes Gates to become world’s richest
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos briefly became the world’s richest man in Forbes magazine’s tracking of wealth, as stock in his e-commerce company hit an all-time high. Amazon shares have been trading at a record high. They hit $US1,083.31 at about noon on Thursday (local time). According to securities filings, Mr Bezos owns about 80 million shares, or 17 per cent. Those shares were valued at more than $US87 billion at the peak.

Lok Sabha passes bill to amend Companies Act
The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a bill to amend the Companies Act, 2013, seeking to strengthen corporate governance standards, initiate strict action against defaulting companies and help improve the ease of doing business in the country.
Piloting the Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2016, minister of state for corporate affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal also said that NSEL and PACL scams were a legacy of the previous regime which the current government is trying to address. The bill, which was passed by a voice vote, provides for more than 40 amendments to the Companies Act, 2013, which was passed during the previous UPA regime.
The amendment to Companies Act 2013 aims to strengthen corporate governance, initiate strict action against defaulters and improve ease of doing business in India.
Iran successfully launches rocket designed to carry satellites
Iran successfully launched its most advanced satellite-carrying rocket called ‘Simorgh’ into space on 27 July 2017.The launch took place at the Imam Khomeini National Space Station in Semnan, some 220 kilometers (138 miles) east of Tehran.The development marks a significant step forward for the Islamic Republic’s young space program. It also raises alarm among the nation’s adversaries who fear that the same technology could be used to produce long-range missiles. The U.S. State Department has termed the launch as “provocative.”The rocket is capable of carrying a satellite weighing 250 kilograms (550 pounds).
Ajay Singh strikes bronze in Asian Youth Weightlifting
India’s Ajay Singh has clinched the bronze medal in Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships to take his country’s tally to three medals in Kathmand. The weightlifter finished at the third spot in 77 kg men’s junior category after lifting 143 kg in snatch and 172 kg in clean and jerk.
Nawaz Sharif resigns after Panama Papers verdict
Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Friday disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over long-running corruption allegations against him and his family, a move that saw Sharif tender his resignation—triggering political turmoil and putting a question mark over Pakistan’s commitment to democracy. After Nawaz Sharif’s dismissal over Panama Papers verdict, his brother, Punjab province chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, may be named Pakistan’s prime minister.
Bollywood actor Inder Kumar passes away
Bollywood actor Inder Kumar, who starred in Salman Khan’s Wanted, passed away on Friday due to a massive heart attack. He was 43. Inder had worked in several films and starred alongside Salman in Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye, Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge and Wanted.
He had also appeared in Ekta Kapoor’s long-running TV soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as Mihir Virani. Currently, he was working on a film titled, Phati Padi Hai Yaar.
