Srikanth Kidambi tops the list of highest earners in badminton for 2017

Srikanth Kidambi created history by becoming the first Indian to win two successive Superseries titles and by entering three consecutive finals at the Indonesian Open, Singapore Open, and the Australian Open. Srikanth Kidambi has surpassed women’s single player Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan to top the chart of the highest earners in badminton for 2017, earning a total of over 95 lakhs ($147,847.50). Sayaka Sato of Japan stands third overall followed by Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei in the fourth position.

Low-cost carrier Scoot evinces interest in promoting tourism in Kerala

Scoot, the low-cost, medium to long-haul airline operator, intends to work with the Kerala government for the promotion of tourist destinations in God’s Own Country. Kerala Tourism is one of the aggressive tourism bodies in India and the company would like to explore opportunities in promoting destinations here, he told presspersons on the sidelines of the launch of Scoot flights in Kochi. The company is in discussions with the Rajasthan government for tourism promotion in the Pink City.

PM Modi to inaugurate APJ Abdul Kalam’s memorial in Rameswaram

A multi-crore memorial of former president APJ Abdul Kalam was on Thursday inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Peikarambu in Rameswaram on the occasion of the “Missile Man’s” second death anniversary. Mr Modi will unveil a statue of Dr. Kalam and will hoist the National flag at the memorial.

Mr. Modi will flag off Kalam Sandesh Vahini, an exhibition bus which will travel across the country and reach Rashtrapati Bhavan on 15th of October, which marks the birth anniversary of the former President. The memorial also has about 900 paintings and 200 rare photographs of the late scientist, who held the office of the president from 2002 to 2007.

 Former Chief Minister of Karnataka N Dharam Singh, passes away.

Dharam Singh, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on 27 July 2017 Bengaluru after a heart attack. He was 80. Mr. Singh was the 17th Chief Minister. He headed the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government from May 2004 to February 2006.

Axis Bank buys FreeCharge from Snapdeal for Rs385 crore

Axis Bank Ltd on Thursday announced the acquisition of Snapdeal-owned mobile wallet FreeCharge in a Rs385 crore all-cash deal, strengthening its position in the payments space. The move gives Axis Bank access to FreeCharge’s 54-million-plus customers, technology, human resources and the branding advantage that comes with an early mover. Axis Bank CEO Shikha Sharma said the FreeCharge acquisition aims at marrying the agility of a fintech company with the strength of a bank to provide a “uniquely distinctive” user experience.

Nagarjuna Oil Corporation Ltd. (NOCL) files for bankruptcy

The National Company Law Tribunal, Chennai, has appointed an Insolvency Resolution Professional (IRP) for Nagarjuna Oil Corporation Ltd. (NOCL) which is setting up a six million tonne refinery on the east coast at Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. Nagarjuna Oil Refinery Ltd., which holds 46.78% of the equity capital in NOCL.“The company shall be entitled to take any proposal before the IRP during the period of six months or such extension that may be permitted in the event an investor is identified to take the project forward,” the filing said.

Microsoft launches ‘Made for India’ Kaizala app

Technology giant Microsoft has officially launched ‘Kaizala’, a productivity app that has been designed to enhance the collaboration and communication experience for Indian enterprises.The ‘Made for India’ app is designed for large group communications and work management, and works even on 2G networks. “Microsoft Kaizala is a ‘Made for India’ product and brings together the two disparate worlds of mobile-only messaging apps and a digitally integrated modern workplace,” Microsoft India president Anant Maheshwari told reporters in New Delhi

Parliament passes Collection of Statistics (Amendment) Bill, 2017

The Collection of Statistics (Amendment) Bill, 2017 received Parliamentary approval after it was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 26 July 2017. The bill was passed by the Parliament’s lower house, Lok Sabha earlier in April 2017.The bill seeks to amend the Collection of Statistics Bill, 2008 and empower the Centre to collect statistical data from Jammu and Kashmir.

Maharashtra’s sex ratio dropped to 899 in 2016 from 960 in 2015

Maharashtra Health Minister Deepak Sawant informed the legislative assembly that the state’s sex ratio has dropped to 899 in 2016 from 960 in 2015 (number of girls per 1,000 boys).

Union Cabinet clears minimum wage code bill

The Union Cabinet on 26 July 2017 approved the new wage code bill that will ensure a minimum wage across all sectors by integrating four labour related laws.The new Labour Code on Wages Bill will be consolidating the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, the Payment of Wages Act, 1936, the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976. The bill was approved by the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The proposed legislation is expected to benefit over 4 Cr employees across the country.

WhatsApp has 1 billion active users daily

WhatsApp has garnered one billion daily active users around the world who transfer over 55 billion messages and one billion videos everyday.The monthly active users of Facebook-owned WhatsApp are over 1.3 billion and it supports 60 languages globally. Over 4.5 billion photos are shared around the world on WhatsApp every day. Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in early 2014.

Inflation to rise to 4.4% in second half of 2017: Nomura report

Retail inflation in India is expected to rise “noticeably” from “trough” in June to 4.4% in the second half of this year, driven mostly by food prices and the base effect, says a Nomura report. According to the Japanese financial services major, although inflation has bottomed, in the medium term it is expected to see a significant uptrend and rise above the inflation target set by the Reserve Bank of India.

SIDBI starts merchant banking operations for MSMEs

Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has started full-fledged merchant banking operations to benefit the expanding number of growth-oriented micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially those with a strong technology and innovation quotient. Ajay K. Kapur, Deputy Managing Director, said SIDBI has supported over 125 venture capital funds and thus can provide support for listing the investee companies on SME exchanges through its merchant banking operations.
