1. RBI stops printing Rs 2,000 notes; Rs 200 note may hit market next month.

RBI hasn’t printed Rs 2000 notes for five months now, even as its Mysuru printing press stepped up printing of Rs 200 notes that are likely to be introduced next month.Officials of the central bank reportedly told the newspaper that the RBI had also accelerated the process of printing the Rs 200 currency notes. The new notes are expected to start circulating by next month.”About 3.7 billion Rs 2,000 notes, amounting to Rs 7.4 lakh crore, have been printed; that more than compensates for the 6.3 billion Rs 1,000 notes that were withdrawn after demonetization on 8 November 2016.The RBI has reportedly already started printing the first batch of Rs 200 note in June to ensure easy currency availability in the country.

2. India gets Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event after 5 years.

India will host its first WTA tournament in five years when Mumbai will stage a $125,000 event in November, giving home players an opportunity to compete with the world’s top-50. It is Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) which has come forward to bring the much- needed tournament to the country. The last time India hosted a WTA event — Royal Indian Open — was in 2012 in Pune.

3. Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrated across India to honour Kargil Martyrs.

The 18th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwar was celebrated across India on 26 July 2017. The day is commemorated every year to mark the success of Operation Vijay and to remember the supreme sacrifice of the brave Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the 1999 India-Pakistan Kargil War.

4. Idea-Vodaphone merger gets CCI approval.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has given approval for the Vodafone-Idea merger. Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, will be its chairman. The merger is expected to create India’s largest telecom company. In March, the boards of Idea and Vodafone India approved a $23 billion merger of the two companies, excluding the latter’s 42% stake in Indus Towers Ltd and the merger is expected to be completed in 2018.

 5. GST Council panel to select National Anti-profiteering Authority.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council in July 2017 constituted a selection committee to identify members and head of the National Anti-Profiteering Authority. The announcement was made by the Union Finance Ministry on 25 July 2017.The selection committee will be chaired by Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha. The National Anti-profiteering Authority under GST is tasked with ensuring that the full benefits of a reduction in tax on supply of goods or services flow to the consumers.

6. Centre to release commemorative coin of MGR.

The Union Government has agreed to release a commemorative coin to mark the birth centenary celebrations of AIADMK Founder and late Chief Minister M G Ramachandran, popularly called as ‘MGR’. Conveying the information, AIADMK rebel leader and former Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam said based on his request to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi the Union Finance Ministry had promised to issue a commemorative coin.

7. AAI signs MoU with Uttarakhand government for development of civil aviation sector.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has signed a MoU with the Uttarakhand government and Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) to develop the state’s civil aviation sector.The agreement is a part of the body’s effort to create, upgrade, maintain and manage the civil aviation infrastructure in the country.The main aim of the deal is to identify relevant factors influencing the development of civil aviation infrastructure in Uttarakhand and to assess commercial potential of various airports of the state.

8. Zimbabwes Parliament passes bill, giving sweeping powers to President.

Zimbabwe’s Parliament on 25 July 2017 passed a bill amending the constitution to give the President sweeping powers to appoint the country’s top judges without consulting any other institution. If passed into law, the bill will give the country’s President Robert Mugabe the sole responsibility to appoint the chief justice and their deputy. Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who heads Zimbabwe’s parliament, hailed the adoption of the bill.

9. Madras HC makes Vande Mataram mandatory in schools, private and government offices.

The Madras High Court on 25 July 2017 ruled that Vande Mataram should be sung in all schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu at least once in a week and in government and private offices at least once in a month. While issuing order, Justice M.V. Muralidharan said that the national song be played and sung in all schools, colleges and universities at least once a week, preferably on Monday or Friday and in government offices, private companies, factories and industries at least once a month.

10. Researchers develop new method to generate human antibodies.

A team of scientists developed a method to rapidly produce specific human antibodies in the laboratory. The revolutionary technique could speed the production of antibodies to treat a wide range of diseases and facilitate the development of new vaccines. An antibody is a large, Y-shaped protein produced mainly by plasma cells that is used by the immune system to neutralize pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. It is also known as an immunoglobulin.
