SERB Launches Accelerate Vigyan Scheme to Provide Platform For Research Internships
- The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) has launched a new scheme called ‘Accelerate Vigyan Scheme’ (AV Scheme) to provide a single platform for research internships, capacity building programs, and workshops across the country.
- The primary objective of this inter-ministerial scheme is to give more thrust on encouraging high-end scientific research and preparing scientific manpower, which can lead to research careers and knowledge-based economy.

Committee For Reform in Criminal Law to Start Online Consultation From 4th July 2020
- The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted a national level committee for reform in criminal law.
- The committee, which has several leading legal academicians on board, would be gathering opinions online, consulting with experts and collating material for their report to the government.
- The consultation exercise would start on July 4 and go on for the next three months.
- The committee, in its official website, has invited experts in the field of criminal law to participate in the exercise through an online consultation mechanism. Government Approves Scheme to Infuse liquidity into HFCs and NBFCs
- Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday said the government of India has approved a scheme to improve the liquidity position of NBFCs/HFCs through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to avoid any potential systemic risks to the financial sector. To be eligible under the scheme, RBI laid out the conditions-
- a) The Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFCs), including Microfinance Institutions that are registered with the RBI, under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, excluding those registered as Core Investment Companies

ICICI Bank Launches Instant Loan Against Mutual Fund Units
- ICICI Bank has launched a facility that enables retail customers to get loan of up to ₹1 crore instantaneously by pledging their holdings in both debt and equity mutual funds. The fully digital and paperless facility empowers the customers to avail this loan as an overdraft (OD) in a matter of few minutes, without visiting a branch and submitting physical documents.

Shashank Manohar Steps Down, Imran Khwaja Interim ICC Chairman
- Shashank Manohar’s tenure as the International Cricket Council’s first independent chairman came to an end on Wednesday.
- According to a media release sent by the ICC, Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja will take over as interim chairman till the election process is set in motion.
- “ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar has stepped down after two, two-year tenures at its helm. The ICC Board met today and agreed that Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja will assume the responsibilities of the Chairperson until a successor is elected,” ICC stated in a release.
- Manohar, as per ICC rules, could have stayed for another two-year term as a maximum of three terms are allowed.

Chola MS General Insurance Elevates V Suryanarayanan As Its New MD
- Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Company on Tuesday announced the appointment of V Suryanarayanan as its new Managing Director with effect from July 1.
- Suryanarayanan succeeds S S Gopalarathnam, who retires on Tuesday after serving the company for over 41 years, the city-based company said. Cholamandalam MS General Insurance is a Joint Venture between diversified conglomerate Murugappa Group and Japan- based Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Ltd.
- Suryanarayanan currently serves the company as its President and Chief Operating Officer and he will take over the new role on July 1. Gopalarathnam said “after spending 41 years in Murugappa Group, last 19 years in Chola and 12 plus years in Chola MS as its MD and CEO, I will be retiring from service today.” Commenting about his successor, he said “Suryanarayanan is an old veteran in the Murugappa Group and he came into Chola and has been in the company for 14 years.
- The last one year or so, he has been the president and COO. He is going to be the MD and CEO tomorrow”. On taking over the new responsibility, Suryanarayanan said it was an honour and privilege to take over the reins from Gopalarathnam. “The best edition of Murugappa Group and Chola MS shall continue even during my reign as the head of the company”.
- Gopalarathnam, a chartered accountant and company secretary, had joined the Murugappa Group in 1979 as a management trainee at TI Cycles and served in various capacities in finance and marketing functions.
- On the company”s performance during the first quarter ending June 30, 2020, Gopalarathnam said they expect to record a degrowth following the nationwide COVID-19 enforced lockdown and added that conditions may improve from the third quarter onwards. “Q1,we (Chola MS) may be de-growing at around 14-15 per cent and industry”s degrowth will be around 12-13 per cent… We expect some kind of flattening in Q2. Third quarter onwards we may expect some growth to happen. There is high possibility for motor insurance coming back to normal,” he said.
- Gopalrathnam said the company”s health insurance saw a good response for its COVID-19 related products. On whether the company was looking at raising funds, he said there were no such plans for the current financial year. “Right now the solvency ratio (of the company) is at 1.70 and it is possible we may end up at 1.70-1.80 this financial year. Therefore there is no need for capital for the current fiscal,” he said.

Indra Mani Pandey Appointed India’s Permanent Representative to UN in Geneva
- Seasoned diplomat Indra Mani Pandey has been appointed as India”s next Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.
- Pandey, a 1990-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as an additional secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
- “He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the MEA said in a statement.
- Pandey succeeds Rajiv K Chander in Geneva.
- In his nearly three-decade career, Pandey served in Indian missions in Damascus, Cairo, Islamabad, Kabul, Muscat and Geneva.
- He also served as joint secretary in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs division of the MEA at its headquarters in Delhi.

IRDAI Sets Up Group to Find Space For Selling Surety Bonds
- The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has set up a nine member working committee to look at the possibility of Indian non-life insurers offering Surety Bond to contractors.

IAF builds locust control system for MI-17 helicopters
- The Indian Air Force has indigenously modified two Mi-17 helicopters for atomised airborne spraying of pesticide to deal with locust attack, according to a statement issued by the IAF on Tuesday.
- Using all indigenous components, the atomised airborne spraying of pesticide has been successfully achieved in air through a configuration of nozzles mounted both sides on external trusses of a Mi-17 helicopters, the statement added.

India and ISRO team up with Swedish Space Agencies For the 2023 Venus Mission-Shukrayaan-1
- On board the Indian Venus mission Shukrayaan-1, the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) will explore Venus for the second time.
- IRF’s satellite instrument Venusian Neutrals Analyzer (VNA) will study how the charged particles from the Sun interact with the atmosphere and exosphere of the planet. Between 2006-2014 IRF’s instrument ASPERA-4 (Analyzes of Space Plasma and EneRgetic Atoms) studied Venus on board the European spacecraft Venus Express. The satellite instrument measured the plasma properties around Venus in detail, as well as neutral atoms that escape into space from the atmosphere. ASPERA-4 consisted of four different sensors to analyze energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) and plasma particles.

West Indies Legend Everton Weekes, the Last of the Three ‘Ws’, Passes Away at 95
- Cricket”s biggest names, most of whom could hear only stories of Sir Everton Weekes” exploits from the bygone era, on Thursday remembered the “great” batsman and a “greater human being” in glowing tributes after he died aged 95.
- Weekes, who formed the famous three ”Ws” of West Indies cricket alongside Clyde Walcott and Frank Worrell as part of a formidable batting lineup for more than a decade, died on Wednesday.
- His death left the cricket world in a state of mourning.
- “As one of the remarkable ”Three Ws”, along with Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Frank Worrell, who together struck 39 Test centuries, he played an important hand in a period that marked the rising dominance of West Indies cricket,” the ICC said in its obit.
- In his career, Weekes played 48 Test matches and made 4,455 runs at an average of 58.61 per innings. That included a world-record five consecutive centuries in 1948 — scores of 141 against England in Jamaica, followed by knocks of 128, 194, 162 and 101 in India. In his next innings in Madras, he made 90 when he was controversially run out.
- All three — Walcott and Worrell, Weekes — were born within a couple of miles of one another – within 18 months in Barbados between August 1924 and January 1926, and all made their Test debuts within three weeks in early 1948.
- Worrell died in 1967 and Walcott in 2006.
- Weekes” average of 58.61 runs places him along with George Headley in the top 10 Test averages of all time.
